Some bottles are purchased for what's inside the glass. Others are purchased because they tell a story worth preserving. Fortuna is both.

Long before bourbon became a worldwide phenomenon, German immigrant Philip (Phil) Hollenbach built Fortuna into one of Kentucky's best-known whiskey brands during the late 1800s. At its height, Fortuna was one of the dominant bourbon labels in Chicago and throughout much of the Midwest before Prohibition and changing times slowly erased it from history. By the late 1950s, the brand had disappeared almost completely.

Fortunately, that wasn't the end of the story.

The team behind Rare Character, led by Pablo Moix, painstakingly researched vintage bottles, historic records, and even compared modern blends against surviving original Fortuna bottlings to revive the brand as faithfully as possible. Rather than simply purchasing an old trademark, they tried to recreate the spirit that Phil Hollenbach intended more than a century ago. That level of respect for bourbon history deserves recognition.

Distillery & Production

While Rare Character is best known for sourcing exceptional barrels and creating carefully crafted blends rather than operating its own distillery, Fortuna has become one of its flagship heritage projects.

Batch 1C consists of a carefully selected six-barrel blend, aged a minimum of six years and bottled at an approachable 102 proof. It isn't intended to be a barrel-proof powerhouse. Instead, it aims to represent a classic Kentucky bourbon profile while honoring the original brand.

The Bottle

Fortuna looks exactly like a bourbon with history should. 

The traditional bottle shape immediately feels familiar without looking dated. The label is elegant, clean, and respectful of its nineteenth-century roots. A wood-topped synthetic cork provides a satisfying seal and adds another touch of quality.

This is a bottle that looks perfectly at home beside both historic brands and modern releases.

Cinnamon and oak linger briefly before fading rather quickly. While we'd enjoy a little more length, the approachable finish makes this an easy bourbon to return to throughout an evening.

Final Call

Fortuna isn't trying to compete with hazmat proofs or limited annual unicorn releases. It's something arguably more valuable.

It represents a forgotten chapter of Kentucky bourbon history that almost disappeared forever.

As a pour, this is simply good, solid Kentucky bourbon. The caramel-forward profile, classic baking spices, gentle oak, and approachable 102 proof make it an excellent everyday sipper. There are no dramatic twists or unexpected flavor explosions. Instead, there is balance, consistency, and a dependable bourbon backbone that showcases the style many of us fell in love with in the first place.

The real story, though, belongs to Phil Hollenbach.

Outside of bourbon historians, his contributions to American whiskey have largely been forgotten. Rare Character has done the bourbon community a genuine service by bringing Fortuna back to life with the care it deserves. We hope this review, along with our earlier look at Phil Hollenbach's remarkable story, helps introduce a new generation of bourbon enthusiasts to a name that once helped shape Kentucky whiskey. Sometimes preserving history is just as important as creating something new.
