The Pour
Hurst Knoll carries a minimum age statement of seven years, but it drinks older than that. The maturity shows up immediately. This is not a youthful, grain-forward rye. The age, blending, and proof work together beautifully. At 101 proof, it delivers enough structure to remind you that you're drinking rye whiskey while remaining remarkably approachable.
Rare Character refers to this release as a "Cocktail Rye" and recommends it for classic whiskey cocktails. After tasting it neat, we completely understand why. The flavor profile practically begs to become a Manhattan or Old Fashioned.
The interesting part is that it never feels dependent on a cocktail. This is an excellent neat pour all by itself.

Dark copper in the glass with excellent color for the stated age. The whiskey immediately looks mature, and the presentation in the bottle only enhances the experience.

One of the better rye aromas we've encountered recently. The sweetness is noticeable the moment the bottle is opened. In the glass, it becomes even more impressive. Notes of Sweet citrus fruit, Caramelized sugar, Grain, Rye spice, Light baking spice. The nose is strong, inviting, and exceptionally pleasant.
Flavor – 3.50 Stars
The palate delivers exactly what the aroma promises. A surprising wave of sweetness and caramel arrives first, followed by classic rye spice and black pepper. Citrus notes continue from the nose and remain present throughout the sip. Notes include Caramel, Citrus fruit, Rye spice, Black pepper, Mature oak influence. What stands out most is the balance.
Many rye whiskeys at this proof either lean too sweet or too spicy. Hurst Knoll finds a comfortable middle ground that allows each flavor to contribute without dominating.
Finish – 3.50 Stars
Medium length and pleasantly warm. The rye character remains present, but there is none of the aggressive bite that can sometimes overwhelm a rye finish. Instead, the whiskey stays smooth, mature, and composed from beginning to end.
The age shows itself here more than anywhere else.

This is a rye that demonstrates the value of thoughtful blending. The minimum seven-year age statement tells only part of the story. The whiskey tastes older, more developed, and more refined than many similarly aged ryes. The proof is exceptionally well chosen. Higher proof might have buried some of the elegance. Lower proof might have reduced the structure. Pablo Moix and the Rare Character team got this one right.
