Old Dominick 8 Year Reserve Bourbon

Memphis History, Big Spice, and a Pour That Made Us Think

Some bottles come with a story before you ever pull the cork. Old Dominick is one of those names.

The brand has deep Memphis roots, going back to Domenico Canale and the original Old Dominick whiskey of the 1800s. Today, the revived Old Dominick Distillery sits in downtown Memphis, carrying that history forward with a full lineup of Tennessee whiskey, bourbon, vodka, gin, and specialty releases. That kind of background always makes a pour more interesting.

And with Old Dominick 8 Year Reserve Bourbon, the expectations were real. Eight years old. Memphis-made. 100 proof. A distillery with heritage behind it and some serious momentum in front of it.  So how did it land in the glass?

Respectfully… but not completely where we expected.

First Impression

The appearance was immediately enjoyable.

In the glass, this bourbon showed a pleasant copper color — clean, warm, and inviting. It looked mature enough to set the stage for a solid pour, and visually, there was nothing disappointing about it.

This is the kind of color that makes you pause for a second before tasting. Not overly dark, not thin or pale. Just a good-looking copper bourbon.

Aroma

The nose had a lot happening.

We picked up:

Caramel. Raisin. Honey. Herbal notes.

That is an interesting mix. The caramel and raisin gave it the expected bourbon sweetness, while the herbal notes started pushing it into a slightly different personality than a more traditional Kentucky-style profile. Tennessee is different!

Official and published tasting notes tend to describe this bottle as sweeter and more dessert-driven, with fruit, caramel, butterscotch, honey, vanilla, chocolate, and oak showing up across multiple reviews. Our glass was not that dessert-forward. For us, spice showed up early and stayed involved.

Flavor

The flavor moved quickly into the spice cabinet. The main notes we found were:

Cinnamon. Raisin. Pepper. Clove.

There was some sweetness in the background, but it did not lead the pour for us. The spice took control. The raisin and clove matched the aroma, while the pepper gave the palate a sharper edge.

That is not automatically a bad thing. Some bourbon drinkers enjoy a spice-forward profile, especially at 100 proof. But for an eight-year reserve bourbon, we were hoping for a little more balance, depth, and richness through the middle of the sip.

The structure was there. The age was there. The proof was there.

But the flavor profile leaned narrower than expected.

Finish

The finish was the strongest part of the experience.

It was extended, spicy, and noticeable. The spice did not fade quickly. It held on, and that gave the pour more staying power than the palate alone might suggest. If you enjoy a longer, spicier finish, this bottle may connect better with you than it did with us. For our palate, the finish was memorable — but the spice stood out more than the bourbon’s sweetness, fruit, oak, or maturity.

The Bigger Picture

This is where the review gets interesting.

We do not think this is a bad bourbon. Not at all.

Old Dominick is doing compelling work, and the story of this release matters. An eight-year bourbon from a revived Memphis distillery is worth paying attention to. The distillery has history, ambition, and a product lineup that deserves more exploration. But this particular pour did not fully match our expectations.

At 8 years old and 100 proof, we were looking for more layered sweetness, oak, fruit, and balance. Instead, our tasting experience centered heavily around cinnamon, pepper, clove, and a long spicy finish. That makes it respectable.

It just does not make it a favorite for us.

Barrel Proof Notes Score

Old Dominick 8 Year Reserve Bourbon
Score: 2.75 / 5

Final Call

Old Dominick 8 Year Reserve Bourbon is a historically interesting, spice-forward Memphis bourbon with a pleasant copper appearance, an aromatic mix of sweetness and spice, and a finish that lingers.

For our palate, it landed at 2.75 stars.

We respect the bottle. We respect the distillery. But this one did not quite rise to the level we hoped for from an eight-year reserve release.

That said, we have tasted other Old Dominick products that may score higher, and we are not done exploring what this Memphis distillery has to offer.

Check back for those notes.
