Our Review Process

At Barrel Proof Notes, every bottle has a story to tell.

Some become unforgettable favorites. Others are dependable everyday sippers. A few simply aren't for us. Our job isn't to tell you what you should like—it's to honestly describe what we experienced so you can decide whether a bottle belongs on your shelf.

Every review is conducted using the same general methodology, guided by our commitment to Honest Scores for Your Pours.

Our Tasting Environment

Whenever practical, every bourbon or whiskey is evaluated under consistent conditions.

We taste:

  • Neat (without ice or mixers)

  • At room temperature

  • In a clean Glencairn or similar tasting glass

  • Without food during the evaluation

  • Over sufficient time to allow the whiskey to open in the glass

If a whiskey is evaluated under different conditions, such as a store tasting, distillery event, or special comparison flight, we will disclose that in the review.

Our Four Tasting Categories

Every review evaluates four key characteristics of the whiskey.

Appearance

The experience begins before the first sip.

We evaluate:

  • Color

  • Clarity

  • Legs

  • Overall presentation in the glass

Color alone does not determine quality, but appearance contributes to the anticipation and enjoyment of every pour.

Aroma

A bourbon's nose often reveals its personality long before the first taste.

We spend time identifying aromas such as:

  • Vanilla

  • Caramel

  • Brown sugar

  • Fruit

  • Baking spices

  • Floral notes

  • Grain

  • Oak

  • Leather

  • Tobacco

  • Herbal characteristics

  • Any other distinctive aromas

A great nose builds anticipation for what's to come.

Flavor

Flavor is the heart of every review.

We evaluate:

  • Balance

  • Complexity

  • Mouthfeel

  • Sweetness

  • Spice

  • Oak influence

  • Proof integration

  • Depth of flavor

  • Overall enjoyment

Some bourbons immediately capture your attention. Others evolve as they sit in the glass. We allow each whiskey time to reveal its full character before reaching our conclusions.

Finish

Great bourbon should leave a lasting impression.

We evaluate:

  • Length

  • Warmth

  • Evolution of flavors

  • Lingering sweetness or spice

  • Overall satisfaction

The finish is often where an exceptional bourbon separates itself from an average one.

Individual Category Scores

Each of the four tasting categories receives its own score using our five-star rating system.

These individual scores describe how the whiskey performed in each specific area.

They are intended to help readers understand the strengths and weaknesses of every bottle—not simply produce a mathematical average.

The Barrel Proof Score

The Barrel Proof Score is our overall editorial assessment of the whiskey.

It is not a mathematical average of the four category scores.

While Appearance, Aroma, Flavor, and Finish are all important, they do not contribute equally to the overall drinking experience.

For example, a bourbon may have an average appearance but deliver extraordinary flavor and a memorable finish. Likewise, a beautiful whiskey can fall short where it matters most—in the glass.

The Barrel Proof Score reflects our complete impression after considering every aspect of the tasting.

It answers one simple question:

Would we recommend this bourbon to another enthusiast?

Because of that, the Barrel Proof Score may be higher—or lower—than the arithmetic average of the individual category ratings.

We believe this produces a more honest review and better reflects what ultimately matters: the enjoyment of the whiskey itself.

★★★½ (3.25–3.50)

Solid, enjoyable whiskeys that deliver exactly what they promise. They may not redefine the category, but they are dependable pours we would happily share with friends or keep on our shelf.

★★★ (2.75–3.00)

Average

Pleasant bourbons with both strengths and weaknesses. Worth trying if you're curious, but unlikely to become regular purchases for us.

★★½ (2.25–2.50)

Below Average

Interesting ideas or promising characteristics, but noticeable flaws prevent the whiskey from reaching its full potential.

Below ★★½

Not Recommended

Whiskeys with significant shortcomings that we would not choose to purchase again.

What Our Scores Mean

A score of 3.50 should never be viewed as a poor bourbon.

In fact, many good, enjoyable everyday bottles fall within the 3.25 to 3.75 range.

We intentionally reserve scores above 4.25 for truly outstanding whiskeys and scores approaching 5.00 for exceptionally rare experiences.

If every bottle earns four-and-a-half stars, then four-and-a-half stars no longer means anything.

Our goal is not to hand out high scores.

Our goal is to provide meaningful scores.

Every Palate Is Different

Taste is personal.

You may love a bourbon that we score modestly.

You may dislike one of our highest-rated bottles.

That's part of what makes bourbon such an enjoyable hobby.

Our reviews are not intended to end the conversation.

They're intended to start one.

We encourage readers to compare notes, share their own experiences, and enjoy discovering the incredible variety found in America's native spirit.

Our Promise

Every bottle receives the same careful attention.

We don't chase hype.

We don't score based on rarity or price.

We don't write reviews to please distilleries or generate controversy.

We evaluate what is in the glass, explain why we reached our conclusions, and leave the final decision to you.

That's our commitment.
